Take Action against Garbage!

We have been learning about waste and trash this month in Science. As we are identifying issues in our school and community, we are taking action to improve them! Here are two examples of our activism:

1) Ramsay Community

On our first Community Walk (click here to see our old post), we noticed examples of Human Impact. We discussed what needs to be there for our community to thrive, and what doesn't need to be there. This time, we went out armed with garbage bags, grabbers, and gloves to make a difference. Instead of just complaining about the trash, we collected it! We even brought a compost bag to separate out waste and trash (what can and can't be decomposed). The stretch of river pathway between 25 Ave and the Scotsman's Hill steps now looks a lot sparklier thanks to our hard work. :)

2) Ramsay School

We noticed that we are having trouble putting our own waste in the right place. Ms Elder collected our garbage for one week (thanks to Ms Jamroziak for helping). We dumped each bag on the floor and noticed items that were in the wrong spot! We reviewed what goes in each bin (landfill, paper recycling, compost, and refundables in the hallway). We also brainstormed ways we can improve our waste system and decided that we're going to decorate each bin so that it's easy to tell where things go.

Then, we're going to help out Mr Turner by labelling and handing out the new compost bins to each classroom.

Our Homework

We have planned our Garbage Art in groups. Each of us wrote down what we need to bring to help decorate our bin next week. Items need to be at school by Wednesday, October 4. That's when we're going to decorate!

Everyone also needs to bring one empty toilet paper roll for a different class buddy craft.
