Light and Shadows Photography
Today, we went on a Community Walk to take photos that relate to Light and Shadows in nature. We had the choice of one Science concept to show:
- Shadow
- Reflection
- Refraction
- Rule of Thirds
- Frame within a Frame
- Symmetry
- Leading Lines
We edited our favourite photo and uploaded it to the classroom to share. Here are a few examples:
This week, we also went back out on the compound to trace our shadows again. We did the exact same activity that we did on October 19th (click here to see the blog entry from the first time we did it).
This gave us the opportunity to observe how much our shadows have changed. We could see that now they are SO much longer!!! As a class, we talked about why that is. We reviewed terms like winter solstice, the Earth's axis, the Earth's rotation around the sun, and the angle of the sun.
We also talked about variables that make this experiment "uncontrolled." For example, we were measuring with our feet and our feet may have grown since Oct 19. Also, we had running shoes on then and winter boots today that might be bigger.
Some students questioned why their measurements were different sizes than their friends. For example, my friend is taller than me but has a shorter measurement. We remembered that we're using a NON-standard unit of measurement (our own feet) so it is difficult to compare with someone else. My friend who is taller might have larger feet, so she'd need less feet to measure her shadow than I would. Here are some pics of us measuring. Can you spot the moon?!
A reminder that we have our Light and Shadows Test on Thursday, December 7. For practice, you can review the material in the Google Classroom.
