Asking Questions when Reading

We know that good readers pause and ask questions as they read a book. We are learning about different types of questions and practicing them when Ms Elder reads our new read aloud book, The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick.

There are two types of questions that we are studying: simple and complex.

A question is simple if it can be answered with a few words.
A question is complex if you need a bigger explanation with details.

We know that if we want to get lots of information, we should ask a complex question. As Ms Elder reads, we often pause and ask questions about the story.

We have also been sorting our questions into categories, depending on if our question relates to the Setting, Characters, or Problem. Take a look at the activity we did today.

We can practice at home by telling you the questions we have about the book.
