Exploring Simple Machines: Wheels

Last week, we learned how to make "wheelies" using a toilet paper roll and cereal box wheels.

The first day, we tested out different designs, such as the axel off-centre, or one small wheel and one big wheel, or a slanted axel, etc. We each demonstrated our wheelie for the class to show how it moved and made observations.

The "Testing Zone"

The second day, we used what we learned to make a wheelie that travelled as far as possible. We made it a friendly competition and measured how far each person's went. Ms Elder encouraged us to build, test, then make changes to make it better. We also had to reflect on changes we would make if we had more time/materials, and why the winning designs likely succeeded.

We learned that it's important to cut your wheels carefully so they are as circular as possible so that it moves smoothly and goes farther (without rolling backwards as it's slowing down). It is also important that both wheels are the same size so that it travels straight. It is best if the axel is in the middle of the wheel.

Here is a photo with our winning designs: Gold, Silver, and Bronze place! :)
