Earth Day Letters
The past two weeks, we have been working with Ms Elder on how to organize our ideas into paragraphs when writing. We also learned the format for writing a letter.
.
We read the book, Dear Children of the Earth by Schim Schimmel. In it, the earth writes a letter to us explaining her concerns. We wrote our letters back to her.
We used three paragraphs in our letters. The first (the introductory paragraph) included three ways we know the earth helps us. Some ideas we had were: provides us with fresh water to survive, gives us plants that exchange our carbon dioxide for clean oxygen, and food, like broccoli. In the second (body paragraph), we explained our "action plan". We said three things that we will do to help take care of the earth and give back (reciprocate) like thinking about packaging before buying something, re-using plastic bottles, and trying to walk or bike places instead of drive. In the third (concluding paragraph), we thanked the earth by saying three things we are grateful, like land to play on, beautiful views to enjoy, and mountains to hike.
We created a piece of artwork out of coffee filters to put on the other side of our letter. Around it, we wrote our pledges (things we will do) in white pencil crayon so they stand out.
We hope you enjoy seeing this artwork displayed outside our classroom if you come to tonight's Parent Council meeting at 6:30, as well as during our sharing assembly today.
Rubrics were sent home today with students so you can see the marks for their letters. They will also be published tomorrow on MyCBE.
