Plant Tracking

Over the past month, we have been growing bean plants in our class. We each got three seeds to try to grow. Every morning, we water our own plant. Here is what they look like.

We also have a few science experiment plants in the class. We have one plant in a glass jar with no soil (only paper towel), and a plant in the closet with no light, and a plant in the cupboard with low light.

The "No Soil" and "Low Light" experiment plants

Our scientific observations of the plants with no soil (in the jar) are:
  • The plant looks healthy because it's tall ~ Zion
  • The plant looks healthy because its leaves are green. ~ Egor
    • We know that means the plant is producing chlorophyll
  • The root system is very big, which is good because it can get a lot of water and it's very stable ~ Yulia
  • The plant is healthy because it's growing new leaves
Our Conclusion: Plants can grow without soil but they do need support

Our scientific observations of the plants in the low light
  • Plants can grow with less light
  • It has leaves but they are smaller and less green ~ Thanve
  • The stem is longer because it's trying to reach the sunlight ~ Sammi
  • The stem is a very light green (almost white) because it's not getting a lot of sunlight to do photosynthesis

We are each keeping track of our own plant's growth on a Plant Tracking Sheet where we record our own scientific observations. We are keeping our plants at school until we get (hopefully) a flower and bean. Then, we will take them home to keep.
